26-year-old Jesus Manuel Cordova from Mexico was entering the US illegally, and came across a boy looking for help on Thanksgiving Day. The boy, 9, just escaped a car accident when his mother lost control of the van and crashed into a canyon.
Cordova apparently tried but couldn't rescue the woman from the wreckage, who later died.
Cordova then comforted the boy, gave him a a jacket when the desert cold set in, built a bonfire and stayed with him overnight. Hunters found them the next morning and called authority. The boy was flown to University Medical Center in Tucson as a precaution.
"For a 9-year-old it has to be completely traumatic, being out there alone with his mother dead," said County Sheriff Tony Estrada. "Fortunately for the kid, (Cordova) was there. That was his angel."
Cordova was then taken into custody by Border Patrol agents.
